TV: HBO — Boxing After Dark

Fight fans get another chance to witness an all out slugfest as Mike Alvarado and Brandon Rios take part in this much anticipated rematch.  The match between the two brawlers will also be for the interim WBO Light Welterweight Championship.

When it was first announced that Mike Alvarado and Brandon Rios were fighting back in October of last year, the general consensus was that it had the potential to be the fight of the year.  Well, Rios-Alvarado 1 was surely the most action packed fight of the year but in my eyes fell just short to Pacquiao-Marquez 4, mostly due to the historical significance of the fight and the shocking ending.  In the first fight, Rios and Alvarado didn’t really show much of the “sweet science” and instead stood in the middle of the ring, throwing bomb after bomb.  Both Alvarado and Rios had their moments throughout the early rounds but neither fighter seemed in much trouble.  However, in the 6th round Rios staggered Alvarado with a huge right hook and for the first time in the fight, someone was in serious trouble.  Alvarado was able to make it out of the round but Rios and trainer Robert Garcia knew they had a chance to end the fight soon.  In the 7th round Rios hurt Alvarado again with a combination of punches and had him up against the ropes, unable to throw back.  The referee stopped the fight and Brandon Rios was awarded the 7th round TKO victory.  After the fight, Alvarado was disappointed that the ref stopped the fight and well I think it may have been a bit premature, it’s not the worst stoppage I have seen.

For Brandon Rios, the victory over Mike Alvarado was a career defining victory and it also set him up for a potential huge payday against Manny Pacquiao, provided he took care of Juan Manuel Marquez last December.  We all know what transpired next, but luckily for Rios the junior welterweight and welterweight divisions are among the deepest in talent and name recognition.  After looking at the landscape, Rios decided that the best option would be an immediate rematch against Alvarado which is taking place only 5 months after their 1st fight.  For Alvarado, it a chance for revenge and to prove that he is on the same level as Rios.

Prediction: As much as I liked the idea of Pacquiao-Rios, I love the idea Alvarado-Rios 2.  The first fight was the closest thing we had to Gatti-Ward and the second fight figures to be much of the same.  I was watching the Road to Alvarado-Rios 2 on HBO earlier today and both fighters acknowledge they were going to bring the same intense and game plan to this fight.  Who I think is going to win and who I feel comfortable backing in regards to laying my money down is different.   In the 1st installment I felt that Alvarado would win as it was Rios’s first fight in the light welterweight division.  I truly do think that this fight could go either way as slugfest such as these are hard to predict a concrete winner.  That leads me to back Alvarado in this one as the odds are way out of line and while Rios probably will win, I do not feel comfortable laying almost 5/1.  I take my chances on the underdog in Alvarado to get a knockout, which would set up a 3rd and final installment between the two brawlers.

Scott's Pick: Alvarado +380
