Sergio Martinez and Miguel Cotto face off on Saturday Night at Madison Square Garden for Martinez’s WBC Middleweight Championship in Boxing action.
Sergio Martinez last lost in 2009 but t was a loss he later avenged against Paul Williams. Martinez has reeled off seven consecutive wins including a win over Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. Martinez seems to always be in the discussion when it comes to pound-for-pound discussions but at 39, does the southpaw still have what it takes. A win here for Martinez, a native of Argentina, will surely set up a few more big money fights as he winds down his career.

For Miguel Cotto this fight will be a good barometer as to where he is in his career and where he sits on the boxing landscape. Cotto has wins on his résumé against the likes of Zab Judah and Shane Mosley but when he has been called to step it up it has been losses to Manny Pacquiao, Floyd Mayweather Jr., and Austin Trout but he is coming off of a TKO win over an over matched Delvin Rodriguez. A win here for Cotto could catapult him back into the spotlight , where he stood before the controversial loss to Antonio Margarito back in 2008.
At this point Martinez just seems to be the better fighter, even though Cotto, at 33 is the younger man. There is no questioning Cotto’s heart, desire and his ability but it has looked a hade below the upper tier boxers, and Martinez is on that upper tier.
Cotto tends to bleed while Martinez fights in a crowd pleasing style where he invites his opponents to be aggressive which should make for a raucous night at MSG for what would already be a hyped up New York crowd.
With California Chrome taking a shot at the Belmont earlier that afternoon in Queens, neither of these fighters is going to take a back seat to him as they are very popular within their communities.
I like Martinez to win this one convincingly and while he should show signs he has been in a battle, he more than likely beats Cotto inside the distance with a stoppage.
