Delvin Rodriguez and Erislandy Lara fight Friday night at the UIC Pavilion for the WBA Light Middleweight.
Delvin Rodriguez enters this fight with a 28-7-4 record that includes 16 knockouts. Rodriguez is 2-2-1 in his last five fights and is coming off a draw against Joachim Alcine that took place last May. Rodriguez is a great combination boxer who can land solid punches to the head and body area. Rodriguez also doesn’t have as much power as he used to at 35 years old, but he packs a strong enough punch to where his opponent must beware of his uppercut. Rodriguez claims he’s in the best shape of his life after taking a full year off. However, you have to be concerned given we haven’t seen a great Rodriguez since his 2013 fight against Freddy Hernandez. This will be Rodriguez’s first time fighting in Chicago.
USA TODAY Sports
Erislandy Lara enters this fight with a 20-2-2 record that includes 12 knockouts. Lara has won three of his last four fights, which includes a December victory over Ishe Smith. Lara does a great job of controlling the pace of a fight and is a deadly accurate puncher. Lara does a great job of cutting off the ring and making his opponent adjust to his style. Lara is widely considered one of the best technical fighters in the sport right now. The concern with Lara is that he can be a little passive at times, doing just enough to win rounds and end the fight by decision. Lara has had two knockouts since 2011. This will be Lara’s second time fighting at the UIC Pavilion.
We’ll probably see an aggressive Rodriguez and considering he says he’s in the best shape ever, he should be able to hang in there a while. However, Lara is simply going to be too much for him.
Lara is one of the more underrated boxers and really shouldn’t have much of an issue, which is why he’s such a heavy favorite. Give me Lara in a TKO.
