The Line: Mares +190 / Cruz -230 -- Over/Under: See the Latest Odds
Abner Mares and Leo Santa Cruz square off late Saturday night at the Staples Center.
Abner Mares enters this fight with a 29-1-1 record that includes 15 knockouts. Mares has won five of his last six fights and is coming off a March victory over Arturo Santos Reyes. Mares is a pressure fighter who does a fine job of controlling the ring and working the body. Mares wears down his opponent over the course of a fight and doesn’t get rattled easily. Mares does a good job of controlling fights and has displayed some recent knockout power with two of his last four wins ending in a KO. The concern with Mares is that his offensive style does open up chances for his opponent to counter. Mares drops his hands enough times to where he can be tagged, as we saw against Jhonny Gonzalez. This will be the ninth time Mares fights in California.
USA TODAY Sports
Leo Santa Cruz enters this fight with a 30-0-1 record that includes 17 knockouts. This will be Cruz’s third fight this year, and he’s coming off a May victory over Jose Cayetano. Cruz is a fighter who has been on the rise for quite some time and can do a little bit of everything. Cruz has fast and powerful hands that have helped produce a knockout in four of his last seven fights. Cruz dictates the pace of the fight and can be very aggressive once he has his opponent figured out. However, like Mares, Cruz does allow way too many hits for my liking, it’s just a matter of finding a fighter who can take advantage of the opportunities. This will be the 14th time Cruz fights in California.
This will be an interesting fight between two guys who like to control the pace but also leave openings to being hit. Mares is being underrated based on the line, as he certainly is no slouch and can put a boxer on his heels when he’s pushing the pace.
Still, Cruz is unbeaten for a reason and is overall the better boxer in this matchup. I look for Cruz to remain undefeated in his impressive boxing career.
