David Lemieux and Gennady Golovkin fight Saturday night at Madison Square Garden.
David Lemieux enters this fight with a 34-2 record and has won 31 of his fights by knockout. Lemieux has won his last nine fights and is coming off a June victory over Hassan N'Dam N'Jikam. Lemieux is a knockout artist with extreme power in both hands and is relentless with his attack. Lemieux has a great left hook and knows how to put fighters away once he’s in his comfort zone. Lemieux has seven knockout victories since 2012 and is well deserving a fight of this magnitude. However, two of Lemieux’s three victories that went the distance have come since 2013. Also, Lemieux believes so much in his offense that he’s willing to trade punches at times and leaves big holes in his defense. This will be Lemieux’s second career fight in the United States.
USA TODAY Sports
Gennady Golovkin enters this fight with a 33-0 record and has won 30 of his fights by knockout. This will be Golovkin’s third fight of 2015, and he’s coming off a May win over Willie Monroe, Jr. Golovkin certainly needs no introduction, as he’s considered by many to be one of the best fighters in the world at the moment. Golovkin is terrific offensively, has great footwork and knows when to pick his spots. Golovkin also has a proven chin and is willing to trade punches at times knowing he’s going to be on the winning side. The one concern with Golovkin is that he is hit a lot more than other elite fighters and you have to be concerned when he fights guys with knockout power. This will be Golovkin’s fifth time fighting in New York.
This is going to be an interesting fight, as both fighters are terrific offensively, have knockout power and are willing to put the defense to the side at times in order to get their shots in play. This could be very fun to watch with two highly skilled offensive fighters.
However, when it’s all said and done, you’d be a fool to bet against Golovkin. He’s undefeated for a reason and is probably the best fighter in the world at this very moment.
Until he shows a serious flaw, Golovkin has to be the pick against anybody in the ring.
