Erislandy Lara and Jan Zaveck fight Wednesday night at the Hialeah Park Race Track.
Erislandy Lara enters this fight with a 21-2-2 record and has 12 knockouts. Lara has won four of his last five fights and is coming off a June win over Delvin Rodríguez. Lara is a great technical boxer who does a wonderful job of controlling the ring and controlling the pace of the fight. Lara also has an incredible reach of 75 inches, so he doesn’t always have to trade punches and put himself in tough spots. Lara is an accurate puncher with good power and doesn’t really put himself in a dangerous position due to his high boxing IQ. While Lara doesn’t have a ton of weaknesses, he does at times get a little too passive offensively and sometimes does just enough to get the victory. With Lara’s skill set, you’d like to see him dominate fights a little more consistently. This will be Lara’s third fight in Florida.
USA TODAY Sports
Jan Zaveck enters this fight with a 35-3 record and has 19 knockouts. Zaveck has won six of his last eight fights and is coming off a April win over Sasha Yengoyan. Zaveck turned 39 years old in March and enters this fight likely way over his head. Zaveck is way past his prime, a lot slower than he’s been in the past and has some serious defensive issues that have hurt him against American fighters Keith Thurman and Andre Berto. The positives for Zaveck is that he is extremely experienced and is a fierce competitor considering he’s the only Slovenian to become a world boxing champion. Zaveck has also won five of his last nine fights by knockout, so he still has some power in those punches. This will be Zaveck’s third fight in the United States. Zaveck has yet to win a fight in the US.
I think it’s pretty obvious who is going to win this fight. Lara is several years younger, by far the more skilled and will have a massive crowd advantage considering this fight will take place in Hialeah, a huge Cuban city in Miami. Like Zaveck’s other two fights in the states, I simply don’t see this ending well for him.
Lara wins this bout rather easily and could very well get his first knockout since 2013.
