Antonio Margarito and Jorge Paez Jr. fight late Saturday night at the Mexico City Arena.
Antonio Margarito enters this fight with a 38-8-1 record that includes 27 knockouts. Margarito has lost three of his last four fights and is coming off a 2011 loss to Miguel Cotto. Margarito is your traditional Mexican fighter who isn’t afraid to take a punch if it means he can get his licks in as well. Margarito packs some sweet power behind his punches and has an impressive reach of 73 inches. At the height of his career, Margarito was the top welterweight boxer in the world. The concern obviously is that Margarito didn’t leave in good form, and he’s returning to the sport at 37 years old and hasn’t boxed in over four years. This will be Margarito’s 14th fight in Mexico.
USA TODAY Sports
Jorge Paez Jr. enters this fight with a 39-7-2 record that includes 23 knockouts. Paez has split his last four fights and is coming off a November loss to Carlos Ocampo. Paez is the son of former WBO and IBF Champion, and he has some of the same traits as his father such as his quick movement. Paez is a bit of a slugger who takes his shots when he can and has proven over the course of his career that he has a tough chin. The concern for Paez is that he’s on the small side of 5’7”, giving up four inches to his opponent. Also, Paez hasn’t fought many big names, so this will be the ultimate test for the 28-year-old. Paez has fought all but 13 of his fights in Mexico.
Years off or not, Margarito is simply the better boxer than Paez by far. It’s really not even an argument. This is a warm up fight for Margarito to see if he’s still got it and possibly get another big fight in America before he officially hangs it up. Even with possible rust surely there, Paez doesn’t really have anything for the former champion.
Margarito should have little trouble in this bout.
