Sadam Ali and Jessie Vargas fight Saturday night at the DC Armory for the WBO welterweight title.
Sadam Ali enters this fight with a 22-0 record that includes 13 knockouts. This is Ali’s second fight since 2015, and he’s coming off a April win over Francisco Santana. Ali has quick feet, impressive movement and knows how to use his 73-inch reach to his advantage. Ali has decent power in both fists, but his left hook has the dangerous potential to end a fight at any moment. Ali should also be well prepared for this fight considering he hasn’t fought in nearly a full year. The concern with Ali is that he can struggle with physical fighters who have nothing to lose and bring the fight to him. This will be Ali’s second fight in Washington.

Jessie Vargas enters this fight with a 26-1 record that includes nine knockouts. Vargas is coming off his only loss, a June fight against Timothy Bradley. Vargas is a strong technical fighter who does a nice job of working fighters from a distance and has an impressive jab. Vargas also does a nice job of mixing things up and can land rapid combinations when he feels like he has his opponent on the ropes. Vargas doesn’t have much power, as he hasn’t had a knockout since July of 2008. The concern for Vargas is that he just lost the biggest fight of his career and can get very wild at times, opening up holes in his defense. This will be Vargas’ first fight in Washington.
It’s hard not to like Ali in this bout, as he’s the better boxer, packs more of a punch and can take advantage of Vargas’ aggressives. Ali has all the tools to end this fight in a possible knockout if Vargas gets too wild.
Look for the Brooklyn boy to remain undefeated.
