Andre Ward and Sullivan Barrera fight late Saturday night at the Oracle Arena.
Andre Ward enters this fight with a 28-0 record that includes 15 knockouts. This will be Ward’s second fight since 2015, and he’s coming off a June win over Paul Smith. Ward is one of the better technical fighters in the sport who knows how to adjust to his opponent and stay out of harm's way. Ward also has a terrific jab and has produced a knockout in two of his last three fights. Ward has simply been one of the more underappreciated fighters over the last few years. Ward has shown little weakness throughout his career, but he does have just three fights under his belt since 2012 and rust could start to build as he’s now 32 years old. This will be Ward’s 22nd fight in California, his home state.
USA TODAY Sports
Sullivan Barrera enters this fight with a 17-0 record that includes 12 knockouts. This will be Barrera’s fourth fight since 2015, and he’s coming off a December win over Karo Murat. Barrera has been getting busy the last couple of years despite turning 34 years old in February. Barrera is also a smart boxer who has terrific power and a right punch that could end a fight rather quickly. Barrera does a great job of working the body and doesn’t mind trading punches from time to time, as he’s capable of landing deadly combinations. The concern with Barrera is that he’s fought an unimpressive resume throughout his career, as Murat and Jeff Lacy are truly the only fighters worth mentioning. This is a big step up for the Cuban. This will be Barrera’s second fight in California.
This has the potential to be an interesting fight, as Barrera has the offensive game to give Ward his first loss if he isn’t careful. However, smart people will continue to back Ward against these type of fighters. Barrera hasn’t come close to boxing somebody as talented as Ward and could be in for a big surprise considering the big step up at this point of his career. Ward is just too talented and proven to bet against.
Look for Ward to be the fighter that remains undefeated when this bout is finished.
