Kubrat Pulev and Dereck Chisora fight Saturday at the Barclaycard Arena for the European Heavyweight title.
Kubrat Pulev enters this fight with a 22-1 record that includes 12 knockouts. Pulev has won five of his last six fights and is coming off a December win over Maurice Harris. Pulev is a powerful and physical heavyweight who understands angles and range. Pulev has good timing with his punches and is quite accurate with his pesky jab. Pulev only has one knockout since 2013, but he does still have some power in those hands when he has the chance to land a haymaker. The concern with Pulev is that he tends to display poor footwork and leave holes in his defense when attacking. Against polished fighters as we saw in Wladimir Klitschko, Pulev can pay for his defensive mistakes. Pulev has fought majority of his career in Germany.
USA TODAY Sports
Dereck Chisora enters this fight with a 25-5 record that includes 17 knockouts. Chisora has won his last five fights and is coming off a January win over Andras Csomor. Chisora is an athletic and aggressive boxer who likes to pressure his opponent and throw a lot of punches and combinations. Chisora is at his best when trading blows, and he can really takeover a fight when he gets comfortable. Chisora isn’t the most accurate puncher, but his rapid punches have led to three straight knockouts. The concern with Chisora is that he’s a very predictable fighter which is why most of his losses have come to guys with high boxing IQs. Chisora also isn’t the best defensively. This will be Chisora’s fourth fight in Germany.
Pulev should win this fight due to his boxing IQ and the fact he’s a little more controlled than the sometimes crazy Chisora. Chisora’s strength can sometimes be his downfall and is the main reason he’s lost five of his 30 bouts. Pulev is easier to trust and should be able to use Chisora’s aggressiveness against him like other fighters have in the past.
Give me Pulev for the victory.
