Jordan Shimmell and Murat Gassiev fight Tuesday night at the Black Bear Casino on FS1.
Jordan Shimmell enters this fight with a 20-1 record that includes 16 knockouts. Shimmell has won five of his last six fights and is coming off a February win over Willis Lockett. Shimmell bounced back nicely from his loss to Isiah Thomas and hopes to put together another nice performance that proves he’s one of the top boxers in the United States. Shimmell has an impressive reach of 80 inches and uses his length to land combinations to the body and head that wear down their opponent over time. We saw what happened in Shimmell’s last fight, as Lockett was holding on for dear life and the referee eventually called the fight. Shimmell is relentless with his offensive attack and is a high IQ fighter who is also above-average defensively. Shimmell is an overall extremely polished boxer.
USA TODAY Sports
Murat Gassiev enters this fight with a 22-0 record that includes 16 knockouts. This will be Gassiev’s fifth fight since 2015, and he’s coming off a December no contest against Isiah Thomas. Gassiev will be eager to redeem himself after he hit Thomas late and forced the referee to call the fight. Gassiev is a pressure fighter with quick and knockout power in both of his hands. In fact, Gassiev has won his last five fights by knockout. Gassiev is the definition of a scrapper and doesn’t mind trading punches with his opponent if it means he’s going to get his shots. The concern with Gassiev is that he doesn’t have a ton of head movement and ends up taking a lot of unnecessary punches.
This should be a fun fight between two guys who like to throw a lot of combinations and have some pop behind their punches. However, overall, Shimmell is the more accomplished and polished boxer between the two and should come away with the victory. Gassiev has defensive issues and Schimmell is experienced and smart enough to take advantage of those holes.
I expect Shimmel to come away with the win here and inch closer to a title shot.
