Erislandy Lara and Vanes Martirosyan fight Saturday night at The Cosmopolitan for the WBA and IBO light middleweight titles.
Erislandy Lara enters this fight with a 22-2-2 record that includes 13 knockouts. Lara has won five of his last six fights and is coming off a November win over Jan Zaveck. Lara has been rolling ever since losing to Saúl Álvarez, and he’s coming off his first knockout since 2013. Lara is a great technical boxer who doesn’t really put himself in harms way and does a good job of controlling the bout. Lara is a very accurate and powerful puncher, who is able to put his 75-inch reach to good use. When Lara isn’t being passive with his offensive attack, he’s one of the tougher boxers in the sport to beat. This will be Lara’s 10th fight in Las Vegas.
USA TODAY Sports
Vanes Martirosyan enters this fight with a 36-2-1 record that includes 21 knockouts. Martirosyan has won four of his last six fights and is coming off a September win over Ishe Smith. Martirosyan has been shaky since the first fight against Lara, but he’s already proven he can hang around with quality fighters. Martirosyan has decent hand speed, an impressive right hand and is constantly moving when throwing punches, making it hard for his opponent to counter. Martirosyan is also a well conditioned fighter who doesn’t wear down much if a fight happens to go the distance. Martirosyan needs to be more aggressive than he’s been in the past if he hopes to pull off the upset. This will be Martirosyan’s 17th fight in Las Vegas.
These two fought back in 2012, but the fight was called after Martirosyan suffered a cut due to heads bumping. Even though it was ruled a technical draw, Lara outboxed Martirosyan in that fight. Lara is just the more polished boxer and has high enough intelligence to where he isn’t going to put himself in danger against the crafty Martirosyan. This should be an entertaining fight, but Lara will once again be more impressive.
Give me Lara to get his fourth straight victory.
