Jermell Charlo and John Jackson fight Saturday at The Cosmopolitan for the WBC Super Welterweight title.
Jermell Charlo enters this fight with a 27-0 record that includes 12 knockouts. This will be Charlo’s third fight since 2015, and he’s coming off a October win over Joachim Alcine. Charlo is a terrific athlete who is starting to build some serious buzz at 25 years old. Charlo relies on beating his opponent to the punch and has a very effective jab that sets up a straight right. Charlo’s quickness and hand speed is unmatched and allows him to sneak and sneak out when throwing combinations. The only issue with Charlo is that he’s sometimes too passive in the ring due to his confidence, as he’ll let off on the aggressiveness. This will be Charlo’s seventh fight in Las Vegas.
USA TODAY Sports
John Jackson enters this fight with a 20-2 record that includes 15 knockouts. Jackson has won five of his last six fights and is coming off a August win over Dennis Laurente. Jackson should be well rested for this fight after having just one bout since December of 2014. Jackson is also a crafty fighter with great hand speed and does an impressive job of moving his head. Jackson lands accurate shots and has enough power to produce six knockouts in his last 10 wins. Jackson can be a one-hit guy but also also shown he can box for the whole bout, as he showed against Willie Nelson a few years ago. Dah Rock is a very underrated fighter who has earned another shot at a title. This will be Jackson’s third fight in Las Vegas.
This should be a hell of a fight between two athletic guys who can land rapid combinations and do a lot of moving in the ring. I think this fight is closer than what the line indicates. However, Charlo is overall the better and more polished boxer. Also, Jackson has come up small in his biggest fights, which includes a loss to Nelson and a knockout loss to Andy Lee.
Should be entertaining, but I have Charlo getting the victory and remaining undefeated.
