Shane Mosley and David Avanesyan fight Saturday night at the Gila River Arena for the WBA interim welterweight title.
Shane Mosley enters this fight with a 49-9-1 record that includes 41 knockouts. Mosley has won three of his last four fights and is coming off a December win over Patrick López. Mosley should be real confident after winning two fights in 2015 despite retiring from the sport for two years. Mosley will turn 45 years old in September, but he has still won four of his last five fights by knockout. Despite his age, Mosley’s combination of quickness and power has made him one of the more successful boxers of this generation. Moseley obviously isn’t as fast as he once was, but he still has the power and aggressiveness that overwhelms his opponents. This will be Mosley’s first career fight in Arizona.

David Avanesyan enters this fight with a 21-1-1 record that includes 11 knockouts. Avanesyan has won his last eight fights and is coming off a November win over Charlie Navarro. Avanesyan enters this fight as an unknown to casual boxing fans, but he dominated his way throughout Russia and is coming off a knockout of 36-year-old Navarro to get the belt. This will be Avanesyan’s first time defending the belt and easily the biggest fight of his career. Avanesyan will turn 28 years old in August and will have the quickness advantage here. Avanesyan doesn’t have a ton of power, but he works the body well and mixes in fluid combinations. This will be Avanesyan’s first career fight in the United States.
Common sense would tell you Avanesyan should win this fight due to being damn near 20 years younger and faster. Mosley hasn’t fought anybody good for quite some time. However, it’s not like Avanesyan has a resume full of world beaters, and he’s traveling out of his comfort zone for the first time. Also, Mosely has the experience edge, is smarter and will have the crowd on his side as well.
I don’t love it, but I feel forced to back old man Mosely in this fight.
