Javier Fortuna and Jason Sosa fight Saturday at the Capital Gym for the WBA World super featherweight title.
Javier Fortuna enters this fight with a 29-0-1 record that includes 21 knockouts. This will be Fortuna’s third fight since 2015, and he’s coming off a September win over Carlos Ivan Velasquez. Fortuna has been in many big fights throughout his career and has passed every test with flying colors besides a 2013 split decision against Luis Franco. Fortuna brings a lot of energy into the ring and has power in both hands, as five of his last eight victories have ended in knockout. Fortuna has great head movement, quick hands and is just extremely dangerous with his offensive attack. Fortuna has shown very little weakness throughout his career besides the fact he does have poor fotowork from time to time. This will be Fortuna’s first fight in Beijing.
USA TODAY Sports
Jason Sosa enters this fight with a 18-1-4 record that includes 14 knockouts. Sosa has won five of his last six fights and is coming off a December draw against Nicholas Walters. Sosa has also been on a massive roll over the years with his only loss coming in 2010 to Tre'Sean Wiggins. Sosa is a downright warrior who can withstand punches to the body and keep moving. Sosa brings a lot of heart into the ring and isn’t going to go down easy, as he’s gone toe-to-toe with everybody he faces for much of his career. Sosa also has power in both hands and has won his last 13 bouts by knockout. The only concern with Sosa is that he’s willing to trade punches at times, something that won’t fly against a knockout artist. This will be Sosa’s first fight in Beijing.
There’s value with Sosa and the big plus money considering his toughness and his ability to land power shots. However, Fortuna is the better boxer overall and should be able to take advantage of Sosa’s willingness to trade punches. Fortuna is also more proven over the course of his career and has pretty much seen everything Sosa brings to the table.
I’ll take Fortuna by knockout. The kid is just too talented.
