Abner Mares and Jesus Cuellar fight Saturday night at the Barclays Center for the WBA (Regular) Featherweight title.
Abner Mares enters this fight with a 29-2-1 record that includes 15 knockouts. Mares has won six of his last eight fights and is coming off a August loss to Leo Santa Cruz. Mares has to be hungry to get back in the ring after losing a close contest for the WBA (Super) Featherweight title. Mares is a pressure fighter who does a good job of controlling the ring and working the body of his opponent. Mares likes to stay busy, which is why two of his three non-victories have ended in close calls. The concern with Mares is that he allows himself to sometime take unnecessary hits, which we saw in his last fight and against Jhonny Gonzalez. This will be Mares’ first career fight in Brooklyn.
USA TODAY Sports
Jesus Cuellar enters this fight with a 28-1 record that includes 20 knockouts. Cuellar has won 11 straight fights and is coming off a December win over Jonathan Oquendo. Cuellar hasn't lost a fight since 2011 and will put his belt on the line for a sixth straight bout. Cuellar has extreme power in both hands, as he relies on speed and power and has produced six knockouts in his last nine victories. It’s also fair to say Cuellar has a proven chin ever since coming to the United States and stepping up in competition compared to the fighters he had back in Argentina. Cuellar can be a bit wild at times, as he tends to swing volume punches and go for the kill, but if those haymakers land, his opponent tastes the canvas more times than not. This will be Cuellar’s second career fight in Brooklyn.
This should be a terrific battle between two young champions looking to take that next step in their careers. Mares has the experience edge in this fight and is probably the smarter boxer, but I really like the form Cuellar is in and his power and aggressive offensive attack may be the tipping point in this fight.
So, in a toss-up, I’m siding with Cuellar to get the victory.
