Keith Thurman and Shawn Porter fight Saturday night at the Barclays Center for the WBA Welterweight title on Showtime.
Keith Thurman enters this fight with a 26-0 record that includes 22 knockouts. This will be Thurman’s third fight since 2015, and he’s coming off a July win over Luis Collazo. Thurman was supposed to fight back in March but had to delay the bout due to minor injuries in a car accident. Thurman has shown he’s the real deal, as he’s a technical boxer with a high IQ and does a fine job of adjusting to his opponents. Thurman also has power in both hands and has won 10 of his last 15 fights by knockout. Thurman has shown very little weakness over the course of his career, but he does tend to keep his hands a tad low, leaving room for a big punch. This will be Thurman’s second career fight in Brooklyn.

Shawn Porter enters this fight with a 26-1-1 record that includes 16 knockouts. Porter has won five of his last six fights and is coming off a June win over Adrien Broner. Porter bounced back nicely from his loss to Kell Brook with two solid victories and hopes to make another statement to boxing fans. Porter is an aggressive boxer who throws a ton of punches over the course of a fight and is at his best when dictating the pace and pressuring his opponent. Porter is extremely strong and has won nine of his last 18 fights by knockout. The concern with Porter is that he seems to only be able to fight one way, and that’s swarm his opponent, which could backfire against somebody who can make proper adjustments. This will be Porter’s second career fight in Brooklyn.
This should be a hell of a fight between two boxing stars who are still in the prime of their careers. You can’t put anything past Porter, especially after he just schooled a talented Broner. However, Thurman is able to adjust on the fly, has a higher boxing IQ and has the power advantage that will make Porter think twice about trying to rush in reckless at times.
Thurman has what it takes to remain undefeated here, and I think he gets it done.
