Matt Korobov and Brian Vera fight early Saturday night at The Bomb Factory.
Matt Korobov enters this fight with a 25-1 record that includes 14 knockouts. Korobov has won five of his last six fights and is coming off a January win over Josue Ovando. This will be Korobov’s second fight since getting kncoked out by Andy Lee back in 2014. Despite that one hiccup, Korobov has been very consistent throughout his career even if his resume doesn’t feature a ton of big names. Korobov boxes bigger than he is at 5’11”, has above-average punching power and likes to bring the fight to his opponent with pressure. Korobov just has to be careful with counters due to him always being on the aggressive side. This will be Korobov’s fourth career fight in Texas.
USA TODAY Sports
Brian Vera enters this fight with a 23-10 record that includes 14 knockouts. Vera has lost his last four fights and is coming off a June loss to Rocky Fielding. Vera is clearly in poor form, as he hasn’t won a fight since his 2013 bout against Donatas Bondorovas, and you have to wonder if age is catching up as he’ll be 35 at the end of the year. When in good form, Vera can hang with just about anybody as he has wins over Andy Lee and Sergio Mora. Vera is solid defensively and has a quick left hand that opponents have to watch out for. Vera also has a proven chin with only three of his 10 losses coming by knockout. However, we haven’t seen Vera look good in the ring in quite some time. Vera has fought much of his career in Texas, his home state.
I’m not sure how anybody can back Vera in his current form. The guy has lost four straight fights and hasn’t shown much that makes me think he’s going to turn that around. Korobov is well rested and simply the better boxer at this point in his career than the older Vera. This feels like another throwaway fight for Korobov, who is still trying to recover from his loss to Lee.
Give me Korobov by a wide margin.
