Luke Campbell and Argenis Mendez fight Saturday at the First Direct Arena for the WBC Silver Lightweight title.
Luke Campbell enters this fight with a 13-1 record that includes 11 knockouts. Campbell has won five of his last six fights and is coming off a March win over Gary Sykes. Campbell did a nice job of bouncing back from his controversial loss to Yvan Mendy and now has a chance to get another belt. Campbell doesn’t need much of an introduction, as he’s one of the more accomplished boxers in the UK who brings great instincts, power and swagger when he enters the ring. Campbell can end a bout with one swing, as his last seven victories have ended in knockout, and his ability to counter can’t be looked over as well. Campbell has fought his whole career, except one fight, in the United Kingdom, his birthplace.
USA TODAY Sports
Argenis Mendez enters this fight with a 23-4-1 record that includes 12 knockouts. Mendez has split his last four fights and is coming off a April loss to Robert Easter Jr. Mendez is from the Dominican Republic, who is also an accomplished boxer and a former IBF Super Featherweight champion. Mendez isn’t in the best form right now, but he is an experienced boxer who just turned 30 years old and has a solid reach of 70 inches that allows him to do damage with his jab. Mendez has some op behind his punches and he’s one of three guys to knockout Juan Carlos Salgado. The obvious concern with Mendez is that he hasn’t looked great recently, especially after getting knocked out in his last bout. This will be Mendez’s first fight in the United Kingdom.
Overall, Campbell has the overwhelming power advantage in this bout and is simply the more polished boxer in all areas. Mendez has been hit or miss lately and he doesn’t have anything that can counter Campbell’s power punches. Not to mention the fact Campbell will be the huge crowd favorite.
Give me Campbell to win this fight and the belt in convincing fashion.
