Mikey Garcia and Elio Rojas fight Saturday night at the Barclays Center on Showtime.
Mikey Garcia enters this fight with a 34-0 record that includes 28 knockouts. This will be Garcia’s first fight since 2014, and he’s coming off a January win over Juan Carlos Burgos. Garcia has been out of the ring for two and a half years due to contract issues with Top Rank, so it will be interesting to see how the 28-year-old looks. Garcia was the WBO super featherweight champ the last time we saw him and has won eight of his last nine fights in the eighth round or earlier. Garcia doesn’t need much of an introduction, s the kid can flat out box and has ridiculous knockout power in his punches. Garcia comes from a boxing family, has a high IQ and knows how to breakdown his opponents. This will be Garcia’s fourth fight in New York.

Elio Rojas enters this fight with a 24-2 record that includes 14 knockouts. Rojas has won six of his last eight fights and is coming off a 2014 win over Robert Osiobe. Rojas has had his own contract issues with Don King, which has to do with why he has just one fight since his 2012 bout against Jhonny Gonzalez. Rojas has pretty much wasted the best years of his career as The Kid is now approaching 34 years old and has just four fights since 2010. When in good form, Rojas has great boxing skills with a reach of 70 inches. Rojas has been able to beat respectable boxers throughout his career, including Takahiro Ao and Hector Velazquez. This will be Rojas’ seventh fight in New York.
This is a tough fight to call because nobody has a real idea of how either fighter is going to look. We know Garcia is the better boxer, but two and a half years outside of the ring is no joke. Rojas has also had his time outside of the ring and is now out of his prime given his age.
If you’re going to pick this fight, the smart side would be the younger Garcia, who has the power advantage and is overall the smarter boxer. Even at their best, there’s nothing Rojas has that Garcia hasn’t already seen.
Give me Garcia in what should be an easy fight.
