Andy Ruiz Jr. and Franklin Lawrence fight Saturday night at the Tachi Palace Hotel & Casino for the NABF Heavyweight title.
Andy Ruiz Jr. enters this fight with a 28-0 record that includes 19 knockouts. This will be Ruiz’s fifth fight since 2015, and he’s coming off a July win over Josh Gormley. Ruiz continues to climb the boxing rankings as he approaches 27 years old and will be defending his belt for a fifth time. Ruiz is a smart boxer who does a fine job of setting his opponent up for the big punch. Ruiz has an effective jab, but his overhand right and left hook is where he does majority of his power. Ruiz has had 11 of his last 14 fights end by stoppage and that has a lot to do with why he’s such a heavy favorite in this bout. Ruiz has fought a lot in California, his current residence.
USA TODAY Sports
Franklin Lawrence enters this fight with a 21-2-2 record that includes 16 knockouts. Lawrence has won nine straight fights and is coming off a March win over Grover Young. Lawrence is still finding ways to produce despite quickly approaching 41 years old. Lawrence is an extremely confident boxer with a hell of a motor on him, and he won’t head into the ring thinking he’s a heavy underdog. Lawrence also still has some serious pop behind his punches with his last 12 victories coming by stoppage, and he likes to work the inside and land combinations. Lawrence’s only two losses came to Oliver McCall in 2009 and Bermane Stiverne in 2006. This will be Lawrence’s third fight in California.
This should be an interesting fight that could result in an upset. Lawrence is confident, experienced and will be able to fight his style given the way Ruiz likes to box. There’s also always questions with Ruiz and his weight, as he’s often out of shape and sluggish at times. Given the line, I see value in Lawrence pulling off the upset.
This isn’t your typical boxing match where the overwhelming favorite should walk over his opponent. Lawrence has a solid chance here.
Give me the old man in an upset.
