The Line: Connecticut Huskies -20 See the Latest Odds

The Connecticut Huskies kick off their 2013 college football season as they play host to the 1-AA Towson Tigers in week 1 action.

Connecticut enters 2013 with hopes to return to post-season play after two consecutive 5-7 season left the Huskies just shy of bowling.  The Huskies return Chandler Whitmer under center -- the pocket passer threw for over 2,600 yards through the air last year but was doomed by turnovers and the inability to move the offense as they routinely stalled in the middle of the field.  With new offensive coordinator T.J. Weist in the mix, expect Whitmer to take some positive steps and cut down on his 16 interception showing from last season.  Weist should also help with a promising young receiving corps who feature Geremy Davis who hauled in over 600 yards last year but often disappeared for long stretches.  The Huskies will also need a strong season from Lyle McCombs who was a freshman all-american and fell into his sophomore slump last year falling a few hundred yards shy of his 2011 numbers.

Connecticut Huskies Vs. Towson Tigers Free Pick 8/29/13

Towson has been on the uprise for a few years now under head coach Rob Ambrose and hope to build off last year’s 7-4 showing with a berth in the post season and a deep run this year.  The Tigers were left out of post season play last year and were widely considered to be the biggest snub of the playoff brackets. The Tigers lose key starters in quarterback Grant Enders but will continue to rely heavily on the run as they showcase one of 1-AA’s best backs in Terrance West who has racked up over 2,400 years and 43 TD’s in just two seasons.  The Connecticut defense cannot take this talented runner lightly as multiple 1-A opponents did so and paid last year.  The Tigers will search this summer for someone to replace Enders whose departure likely all but solidified the Tigers will be a quarterback shy of a national title push.

You have to give a ton of credit to Rob Ambrose for the turnaround at Towson and if they continue to compete at a high level this year his name is sure to start being thrown into 1-A coaching conversations.  With that said, as with most all 1-AA vs 1-A matfchups, UConn is too deep and too talented to let the Tigers keep this one close.  I like the Huskies defense to rattle Towson’s new signal caller heavily and the Huskies to pull away early in the 2nd half for the cover.
