TCU Horned Frogs (0-0) vs. LSU Tigers (0-0)

The LSU Tigers and the TCU Horned Frogs face off on Saturday for a monster match up at Cowboys Stadium to kick off their 2013 college football schedules.

The LSU Tigers were somewhat disappointing last season and while they don’t appear to be getting much respect on the national scene the Les Miles’ team is loaded once again. The offense sputtered at times last year and Cam Cameron who has a ton of NFL experience as both a Head Coach and as a coordinator has been brought in to inject some life in the offense. Zach Mettenberger was disappointing last season completing just 58.8 percent of his passes with 12 touchdowns and seven interceptions. LSU is stacked at running back with Alfred Blue, Kenny Hilliard and Jeremy Hill. LSU’s top receivers are back as well with Jarvis Landry and Odell Beckham Jr. and while they had decent numbers overall the LSU passing game just wasn’t as effective as they hoped it was going to be. As seems to be the case every year LSU’s defense has been depleted but the Tigers have a ton of talent waiting in the wings. Lamin Barrow had 104 tackles last season, Craig Loston and and Jalen Mills are part of a secondary that churns out NFL players, but the entire front four needs to be replaced, something the Tigers haven’t had trouble doing. LSU Plays the brutal schedule and adding another game like this doesn’t make it any easier but the Tigers control their own destiny.

The TCU Horned Frogs have some question marks but Gary Patterson’s team looks to be on the upswing after having one of their worst seasons in recent years last season. Last year the expectations weren’t there for the Horned Frogs as they had simply lost too much over the previous two years and throw in the suspension of QB Casey Pachall and it wasn’t a good mix. TCU also seemed to lose every close game they were in including their bowl game to Michigan State in a game they appeared to have won. Pachall is back this year but Patterson hasn’t named a starter between Pachall and Trevone Boykin though the general thought is it will be Pachall. TCU is loaded at running back as they get Waymon James back after being injured last year and he will battle for carries with B.J. Catalon and Aaron Greene. The Horned Frogs are also loaded at receiver where Brandon Carter is back and TCU also adds transfers Ja’Juan Story and Josh Doctson who both could end up being huge gets. TCU’s defense should be much better than it was a year ago and when it comes to the secondary they might be the best in the nation. Jason Verrett does it all and is probably a first round NFL pick meaning Kevin White is going to get plenty of attention. Marcus Mallet is looking like TCU’s best linebacker though the group is a bit of a question mark. Jon Koontz, Chucky Hunter, Davion Pirerson will anchor the line with probably a rotation at the other end to fill Fields’ spot. Gary Patterson’s team don’t generally back down to anyone and don’t expect it here.

LSU is 3-7 against the spread in their last 10 games. TCU is 2-5 against the spread in their last seven games and 0-6 against the spread in their last six neutral site games.

If you are looking for flashy offense and big plays this probably isn’t the game for you as this is more of a “buckle up the chinstrap and hit someone” type of game. Points and yards aren’t going to come easy for anyone and look for the tome to be set by both defenses. With that being said, getting better than a field goal in a game that could go either way but figured to be a 12-10, 16-14 type game  seems like a pretty nice place to be.
