Purdue Boilermakers at Cincinnati Bearcats Free Pick 8/31/13: Steve's Free College Football Pick Against the Spread

The Purdue Boilermakers will have their hands full on Saturday when Purdue heads to Cincinnati to face off against the Bearcats.

The Cincinnati Bearcats open their 2013 season on Saturday by hosting the Purdue Boilermakers.

The Cincinnati Bearcats finished their 2012 season with a solid 10-3 mark. The Bearcats defeated the up and coming Duke Blue Devils in the Belk Bowl, 48-34 to finish out their solid season. The Bearcats finished the year with the 14th ranked scoring defense in the nation, allowing just 18.5 points per game on average. The Bearcats have also been solid offensively, scoring more than 32 points per outing, giving the Bearcats the 39th ranked scoring offense of 2012. Cincinnati returns senior signal caller Brendon Kay under center, while Junior Ralph Abernathy looks to take control of the backfield, at least early on. The Bearcats have the ability to put up another solid year in 2012, but the Bearcats have a tough opening schedule, with three of their first five games on the road.

The Purdue Boilermakers finished 2012 with a record of 6-7, falling to the OK State Cowboys in the Heart of Dallas Bowl 58-14. The Boilermakers started off the season strong, playing solid defensively up front, but Purdue was unable to maintain that momentum and finished the season giving up more than 31 points per game on average. Rob Henry looks to be under center for the Boilermakers, and while Henry has shown glimpses of some nice talent, the singal caller definitely needs to refine his game if the Boilermakers hope to compete in the Big Ten this season. Defensively Purdue will rely heavily on their defensive line to try and generate pressure to help out a struggling secondary for the Boilermakers.

As an underdog of 10.5 to 21 points, the Boilermakers are 0-6 overall and just 3-3 ATS. The Bearcats are an impressive 8-5 ATS in their last three seasons at home, while the Boilermakers are just 3-11 overall on the road the past three years.

I hate to lay this many points in an opener, but honestly I just don’t trust this Boilermaker team. This is not a game that I personally am willing to wager on, but if you must, I would go ahead and lay the points with the Bearcats at home to open their season.
