The Wisconsin Badgers look to defend their 2012 Big Ten title on Saturday when the Badgers play host to the Umass Minutemen.
The Wisconsin Badgers definitely had an up and down season in 2012, finishing the season with a record of 8-6, but still claiming a Big Ten Championship. The Badgers finished the year with the 17th ranked scoring defense in the nation, allowing just 19.1 points per game on average. Where the Badgers really struggled, especially early on, was offensively. Wisconsin finished the season scoring just over 29 points per game on average, putting the Badgers 60th in the nation offensively on the year. James White will be in the backfield for the Badgers against the Minutemen, and while White may not have been as solid as Ball was throughout his career, I love the big play ability White brings to the table for this offense. If both the offensive and defensive lines can stay healthy for the Badgers, the sky could be the limit in the Big Ten.

The Amass Minutemen finished their 2012 campaign with a record of just 1-11. Amass’ lone win was against the Akron Zips late in the season. The Minutemen are ranked in the triple digits in nearly every category, and you don’t need me to tell you on here that this is not a good thing. Amass finished last season scoring just over 12 points per game, ranking the Amass offense 124th in the nation. Defensively, the Minutemen weren’t much better, allowing more than 40 per contest, giving the Minutemen a defensive scoring rank of 121st in the nation.
The Minutemen are just 2-6 ATS in their last eight road games, while going 4-8 overall in that timeframe. The Badgers are 8-6 against the spread in the least three seasons at home, while going an impressive 12-2 overall at Camp Randall in the past three seasons. While being an underdog of more than 31 points in the past three seasons for Amass, the Minutemen are 0-3 ATS.
For me to put any kind of faith in the Minutemen covering, it would need to be a huge number. Well, for the Badgers, this is a huge number. Wisconsin just doesn't light up the scoreboard on a regular basis. It is entirely possible that the Minutemen are held off the board, but even if that is the case I look for the Badgers to play it safe and close to the vest in this one, keeping the scoring low.
