The Old Dominion Monarchs play the Maryland Terrapins on Saturday afternoon in College Park.
Old Dominion lost a shoot out to East Carolina, 52-38, in their season opener on Saturday. This game was played like a video game on the rookie level, with basically no defense at all. These two teams scored at will and put up huge offensive numbers, both by utilizing the air attack. The Monarchs gained 460 yards of total offense, 370 of those yards came through the air. QB Heinicke completed 38 of 51 passes for an impressive 338 yards and 3 touchdowns in the loss. Heinicke also led the team in rushing with 52 yards and a touchdown run. WR Pinkard led the team in receiving with 8 grabs for 92 yards, while WR Roberts chipped in with 9 catches for 74 yards and two touchdowns. The Old Dominion defense was non-existent, allowing 481 total yards to East Carolina. The Old Dominion secondary was burned for 447 yards, and had trouble getting off the field on third down as the Pirates converted 12 of 17. The Monarchs will face a talented offense once again this Saturday in Maryland, and Old Dominion will face a much tougher defense this week.

The Maryland Terps won their season opener 43-10 against Florida International on Saturday. Senior QB C.J. Brown celebrated his comeback from injury with a great performance, throwing for 3 touchdowns and running for two scores against FIU. Brown missed all of last year after tearing his ACL in preseason practice. He made up for lost time during an outstanding first half, completing 15 of 16 passes and running for 99 yards to help the Terps go up 40-10. Star WR Diggs caught 5 balls for 98 yards and a touchdown, while WR Long caught an impressive 9 balls for 110 yards and one touchdown. The Maryland defense played great, holding FIU to 171 total yards, while only allowing FIU to convert on 4 of 17 3rd down conversions. Maryland was able to dictate the pass of play and dominate time of possession. This was a great starting point for a Maryland team that was plagues with injuries all of last year. The defense will be tested more in their next contest against a strong ODU offense. However, the offense should be able to produce big numbers against a weak defense.
ODU has a dangerous offense, with Heinicke at the helm, while Maryland also has a great offense with Brown and Diggs. The difference in this game is Maryland has a legitimate defense, while ODU can’t stop anybody on defense. I think Maryland slows the ODU offense down and scores a ton of points on the ODU defense. I’m taking Maryland to win by more than 20.
