The Nebraska Cornhuskers host the Southern Miss Golden Eagles on Saturday at Memorial Stadium in Lincoln.
The Nebraska Cornhuskers got a win in their season opener this past Saturday, but Husker fans definitely had some nervous moments. We all knew going in that the Husker offense would be solid, and it was as the Huskers amassed 530 yards of total offense with Martinez under center. The Huskers are a ground team for sure, and once again Nebraska pushed around the Cowboys on the ground as the Huskers rushed for 375 yards on the ground with two different players reaching 100+ yards on the day. The story of the day for the Huskers however, was their defense. Nebraska allowed 602 yards against the Cowboys, 383 of which came through the air. The Huskers knew going into this season that their big question mark would be the play of their defense, and even though the Cowboys do have some experience and talent on that side of the ball, there is no way that the Huskers, under Bo Pelini should allow 600+ yards to anyone, especially the Wyoming Cowboys. Look for the Huskers to play inspired football, especially defensively against the Golden Eagles on Saturday.

The Southern Miss Golden Eagles dropped their season opener on Saturday, falling to Texas State 22-15. The Golden Eagles are still a young team, but this team is coming off a winless season in 2012, and it appears that the Golden Eagles still have a lot of work to do. The Golden Eagles had a shot against the Bobcats, but the Southern Miss defense couldn’t hold on late as Texas State scored the go ahead, and would be winning touchdown with just under three minutes remaining in the final quarter. Southern Miss did gain 400 yards of offense against Texas State, but the Golden Eagles were not able to turn those yards into points efficiently. The Golden Eagles did throw for 377 yards against the Bobcats, but the two picks by Bridgford really killed them. If the Golden Eagles have any shot of running with the Huskers, Southern Miss needs to take care of the ball, or this one will get ugly.
We have seen some quick line movement here as the Huskers opened up at -31 in some books, with the line now down a field goal to -28.
The Huskers will be playing mad in Lincoln on Saturday, and look for the Huskers to try and right some of the wrongs, now that their cleats have the dust off of them. The Huskers will move the ball, pretty much at will on the Golden Eagles, but after what I saw against the Cowboys in week one I cannot see giving four touchdowns to anyone. I would suggest watching the line movements closely here, but as it stands right now I’ll take the four scores with the Golden Eagles on Saturday.
