The Syracuse Orange will have their hands full on Saturday when the Orange head to Ryan Field to face the Northwestern Wildcats.
The Wildcats and the Golden Bears played an interesting game to be sure. Wildcats starter Kain Colter went down with a concussion on the first play, and really his was the first in a string of injuries for the Wildcats. So many in fact that Cal fans felt like the Wildcats were taking dives, trying to slow down the clock against them. Of Course Northwestern coach Pat Fitzgerald denied this, but either way it had a factor. Stepping in for Colter was Trevor Siemian, but really this isn’t much of a step down in talent as Siemian is the second part of the Wildcats two QB system. Siemian was effective against the Golden Bears, completing 18/29 and throwing for 276 yards and a score, against two picks. Interceptions were the story of the day as the Wildcats’ Connor Ellis had two INT returns for touchdowns off of Goff for the Golden Bears, which ended up being the difference in the game. Goff was effective against the Wildcat defense however, throwing for 445 yards and two scores, against his two picks. All in all, both offenses moved the ball well as the Wildcats gained 508 yards on the day, against 548 for Cal.

The Syracuse Orange did not get their season off to the start they had hoped as the Orange fell to the Penn State Nittany Lions 23-17 in Happy Valley on Saturday. The Orange were in the game against the Nittany Lions, but offensive the Syracuse attack never really found their footing. Syracuse managed just 260 yards of offense against the Nittany Lions on the day, with 189 coming through the air. Defensively Syracuse did take advantage of a couple miscues from Penn State Freshman signal caller Christian Hackenberg, but it was not enough as time ran out on the Orange’s come back attempt in the fourth.
This has been one of the few lines I have seen that has stayed put since the time of opening, right at -11.5 for the ‘Cats.
This is a no-play for me, but I’m going to have to back the Orange here. The Orange were able to hang around with the Nittany Lions in Happy Valley (yes I know PSU has a Frosh QB) but if the Orange can play there, they can certainly play at Ryan Field. Attrition could be an issue for the Orange, playing their two season opening games on the road in the Big Ten, but I think Syracuse has enough in their tank to hang with the Wildcats on Saturday as I really like how they match up with the Wildcats. Northwestern wins outright, but I’ll take the points here with Syracuse.
