The Tulane Green Wave host the South Alabama Jaguars in the first ever meeting between these programs.
This is really the first season that South Alabama is playing a full Division One schedule and it didn't begin well with, ironically, a 22-21 defeat at the hands of sub-division Southern Utah as a 15 point favorite. The loss was made even more disappointing given the fact that the Jaguars led 21-13 in the fourth quarter, but at the final gun the game numbers were as close as the score. USA out gained the visitors 335-317 with the Thunderbirds throwing the ball better and the Jaguars running it better. Jay Jones led the team on the ground with 90 yards on nine carries, while Brandon Bridge added a 40 yard scoring jaunt, in addition to throwing for 36 yards. Ross Metheny completed 12-17 for 112 yards with a pair of scoring tosses.

Tulane handed sub-division Jackson State a 34-7 defeat to open 2013 on a positive note and give the Bowl hopeful Green Wave a nice start. Tulane certainly didn't overwhelm JSU going by the numbers, but the home team pounced on constant mistakes and didn't need a big offensive game. Nick Montana went 6-14 for 144 yards and a pair of scoring strikes, while Orleans Darkwa ran for 50 yards and two more touchdowns. That was the offense in a nutshell that totaled only 308 yards, compared to 356 from Jackson State, who couldn't hold on to the ball to save their lives. The visitors fumbled six times and lost two and were intercepted four times, while averaging just over two yards per try on the ground.
South Alabama dropped a very winnable game to open the year and Tulane might have simply been the benefactor of butter fingers in their win. I have to see more from Montana to feel confident in this one, but if Tulane wants to go Bowling they have to win this one.
