The Western Michigan Broncos will have their hands full on Saturday as the Broncos head to Ryan Field to face the Northwestern Wildcats.
The Northwestern Wildcats have improved to 2-0 to start the season. The Wildcats are starting to get some national attention, which is nice for Pat Fitzgerald, who I have felt for a while is one of the better coaches in College Football. The Wildcats took care of business against the Syracuse Orange on Saturday, beating the Orange 48-27. The Wildcats jumped out on top early, leading the Orange 20-0 midway through the second quarter, and at the break the Wildcats were in full control, leading Syracuse 34-7. Northwestern put up an impressive 581 yards of offense against Syracuse on the day, rushing for 206 and gaining 375 through the air. Kain Colter was back on the field for the ‘Cats this Saturday, and Colter was solid, leading the team in rushing with 87 yards on the ground, while also throwing for 116 and a score. Colter is Northwestern’s dual threat at the quarterback spot, but the pocket passer, Siemian also had an excellent day, throwing for 259 yards and three scores against the Orange. Northwestern is a fun team to watch, and even though Siemian is the better pro prospect, Colter brings an attitude and a dimension to this team that is hard to match.

The Western Michigan Broncos fell to 0-2 this past weekend as the Broncos lost to Nicholls State 23-27. The Broncos took a while to get sarted, trailing the Colonels 21-9 at the break, but coming back in the second half and actually taking the lead in the third quarter. The Broncos were unable to hold on, however, as the Colonels scored twice more in the final quarter to go on top for good, earning the win. The Broncos did manage to gain 485 yards of offense on the day, maintaining a balanced attack with 231 yards on the ground and 254 through the air. Turnovers and poor defensive play were the story of the day, however. Western Michigan turned the ball over twice on two picks, and the Western Michigan defense had problems containing the Colonels as Nicholls State gained 447 on the day against the Broncos.
The line opened up at -35 for the Wildcats and already the number has dropped to -34.
This is one of those games that I tend to stay away from. There are a lot of variables here, most of which are hard to predict. The Wildcats are more than capable of covering this huge number if they kept their foot down the entire time. I just don’t think that will be the case. Northwestern was up for Syracuse and I find it tough to believe that Northwestern will have that same kind of intensity for the Broncos. Personally, I am staying away, but having to choose a side here, I’ll take the points with the Broncos and hope the Wildcats play nice.
