The New Mexico Lobos travel to Pittsburgh to take on the Panthers on Saturday.
The New Mexico Lobos bounced back from their week one loss to UTSA by defeating UTEP 42-35 on Saturday. New Mexico produced 483 yards of total offense, with 395 coming on the ground. This was a big improvement for an offense that only produced 277 total yards against UTSA in week one. The Lobos were led by RB Kasey Carrier, who carried the ball 41 times for 291 yards and 4 touchdowns. QB Mitchem was only 4 of 7 for 88 yards, but rushed 9 times for 51 yards and 2 touchdowns. The Lobos defense did not play well, allowing 399 total yards to UTEP. UTEP rushed for 280 yards and rallied in the second half to force the game into overtime. The New Mexico defense had trouble stopping the run in week one too against UTSA and will need to improve quickly or they will be in trouble against Pittsburgh this week.

The Pittsburgh Panthers will be looking to bounce back after a 41-13 blowout loss to Florida State in week one. The Panthers defense was awful against Florida State’s freshman QB Winston, allowing him to throw for 356 yards and 4 touchdowns. Pittsburgh gave up 533 total yards on defense and allowed Florida State to dictate the pace of play and keep the Panthers offense off the field. The Panthers offensively were up against a solid Seminoles defense and were overmatched. Pittsburgh only had 297 total yards of offense, with only 96 coming on the ground. The Panthers only had the ball for 25 minutes on offense. QB Savage finished 15 of 28 for 201 yards and 1 touchdown with 2 interceptions. RB Bennett carried the ball 9 times for 35 yards, while RB Boyd rushed 3 times for 54 yards. The Panthers had the week off so it may or may not help this offense heading into this week’s matchup.
The Lobos are 4-1-1 ATS in their last 6 road games. The Panthers are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games following an ATS loss. The under is 6-1 in the Lobos last 7 non-conference games. The over is 4-1 in the Panthers last 5 home games.
These two teams have never played one another and this will be the second road game in a row for New Mexico, while Pittsburgh will play its second home game of the year. Pittsburgh will have to concentrate on stopping the rushing attack of New Mexico or they will be in for a tough game. The Panthers have had two weeks to prepare and will be hungry after the loss to Florida State. New Mexico has to travel across the country for this game but I think they will have the offense to keep it close. I’ll take the points with New Mexico against a Pittsburgh team that is too inconsistent for me to count on right now.
