The 0-2 South Florida Bulls return home to face the 0-2 Florida Atlantic Owls in AAC-CUSA action from Raymond James Stadium Saturday at 7 PM.
Florida Atlantic enters Tampa struggling on the season thus far, with an 0-2 record and fresh off a 31-13 defeat at the hands of the ECU Pirates. The Owls played solid offensively for the most part and dominated the time of possession battle with a nine minute edge, but routinely stalled and had to settle for field goals, while the Pirates capitalized with TD’s. FAU quarterbacks Greg Hankerson and Jaquez Johnson both got time for the Owls, but Hankerson played better, throwing for a TD and 116 yards to Johnson’s 65 total. Jenson Stoshak hauled in 2 passes for 63 yards to lead FAU in receiving. On the defensive side of the ball, the Owls held the Pirates offense in check after they exploded last week versus Old Dominion. ECU finished the day with just over 300 total yards, but were forced into two fumbles that resulted in FAU points.

South Florida’s disastrous start to 2013 continued this past week in East Lansing, where they were defeated by the Michigan State Spartans 21-6. The Bulls defense was pretty solid throughout the game, constantly getting pressure on the Spartans quarterback and held them to 265 total yards -- only 64 through the air. On offense, USF continued to struggle mightily as they racked up just 155 total yards and were only able to muster two field goals. The Bulls now rank 116th in the country in points scored. The Bulls defense should have their way with the FAU offense this weekend and, in turn, Bobby Eveld should have plenty of chances to get out of an early season slump that has seen him throw for just 203 yards total.
Some trends to consider -- FAU is 4-0 against the spread in their last 4 September games and USF is 5-2 against the spread in their last 7 games.
South Florida has been abysmal this season on the offensive side of the ball, but I like the Bulls to break out in this contest and look for Shaw to have another strong game rushing the ball, much like ECU’s tailback did against FAU last week. South Florida is at home as well and that should help. I like the Bulls to get in the win column, but expect this game to be ground and pound and a defensive struggle, so I think the Owls sneak away with the cover, despite the defeat.
