It’s a revenge match up in the SEC in just week three of the 2013 college football season as the Texas A&M Aggies host the Alabama Crimson Tide.

Last season the Texas A&M Aggies punctuated their arrival back onto the elite college football scene when they went into Tuscaloosa and upset number one ranked Alabama, and this Saturday they get a crack at a number ranked Tide team once again. It’s no breaking news story that the Aggies are eld by Heisman winning QB Johnny Manziel who has gotten a lot of notoriety off the field and more recently non-football attention on the field, but when it comes to the game there simply aren’t enough superlatives to describe Johnny Football. Last year at Alabama Manziel escaped Tide defenders to make play after play en route to the victory, but he won’t have the same supporting staff he had a year ago. Ben Malena takes over the job as the number on optiuon at running back and the former Mr. Texas Football has proved he can handle the load. The bigger question is on the line where Luke Joekel is off to the NFL. Mike Evans is the Aggies top receiver this season with 13 catches while Sabien Holmes and Malcome Kennedy each have seven. Defensively Texas A&M hasn’t been tested but they will certainly be this week. Howard Mathews has 17 tackles while Clay Honeycutt has 14 and Darian Claiborne has 12. Kevin Sumlin and his coaching staff know they have their work cut out for them if they want to repeat last season’s result against Bama.

The Alabama Crimson Tide are the odds on favorites to win the National Championship for a third consecutive year but head coach Nick Saban would like to avoid needing outside help to do it as both of the last two seasons the tide have tasted defeat once. Alabama has had two weeks to prepare for this game as they last played on opening weekend beating Virginia Tech. A.J. McCarron is back at QB for Alabama but he didn’t look like a seasoned veteran against Virginia Tech completing just 10 of 23 passes for 110 yards with a touchdown and an interception. T.J. Yeldon gained 75 yards on the ground in the win against VT but overall the offense was unimpressive. Amari Cooper led the team with four receptions but it was three touchdowns by Christion Jones, one receiving, one kickoff return, and on punt return, that were the difference makers. The Alabama defense allowed 160 yards on the ground but just 59 yards through the air. Ed Stinson had eight tackles, C.J. Mosely had seven tackles, and Vinnie Sunseri returned an interception for a touchdown. With two weeks to prepare the Tide should be as ready as they can be for this one.

Texas A&M is 4-0 against the spread in their last four SEC games, 5-1 against the spread following a win, and 4-1 against the spread against a team with a winning record. Alabama is 20-8 against the spread in their last 28 road games, 2-5 against the spread against a team with a winning record, and 7-2 against the spread against a team with a winning home record.

The Tide are once again favored here and while I would expect them to play much better than we saw in Atlanta two weeks ago, especially on the offensive side of the ball, there is the matter of stopping Manziel, something they simply couldn’t do last season. There are a lot of variables here and this simply looks to be too many points to be giving the home team and to a player who simply makes play after play.
