The Line: Stanford Cardinal -7 -- Over/Under: 49.5 See the Latest Odds
The Stanford Cardinal and the Arizona State Sun Devils face off on Saturday for a matchup of top 25 ranked football teams in the Pac-12.
The Stanford Cardinal are picked by many to make a run at the National Championship game this season and while they certainly have the tools and have won both of their first two games, they haven’t quite shown that they are championship caliber. Stanford has opened against San Jose State and Army scoring 34 points on each of them but at the same time allowing points and plenty of rushing yards. QB Kevin Hogan has completed 62.2 percent of his passes for five touchdowns and one interception. Tyker Gaffney is averaging 5.9 yards per carry with three touchdowns in the Stanford backfield and Anthony Wilkerson is averaging 5.8 yards per carry in limited action. Ty Montgomery has been Hogan’s primary receiver catching 10 passes and scoring two touchdowns and Kodi Whitfield is next with five catches. The Stanford defense had one interception, four sacks, and has recovered one fumble thus far this season. Ed Reynolds leads the Cardinal defense with 17 tackles, Shayne Skov has 15 tackles, and Wayne Lyons has 12 tackles including three for a loss. Stanford has a solid team but they, and their number five ranking, will be tested in this one.

The Arizona State Sun Devils are looking to make a return to prominence on the national college football scene and they are off to a 2-0 start after beating Wisconsin last week in a game I still can’t figure out what happened in the final seconds. With the clock ticking down Wisconsin seemed to have time to set up a field goal but some poor officiating got in the way and ASU walked off with a two point win without the Badgers ever even getting an attempt off; such is the world of college football. QB Taylor Kelly who has completed 63.4 percent of his passes with five touchdowns and an interception leads the Arizona State offense. Marion Grice is averaging 4.0 yards per carry and has scored five rushing touchdowns for the Sun Devils and he has caught nine passes with another going for a score while Deantre Lewis is among those seeing limited action in the ASU backfield. Jaelen Strong has 12 catches, D.J. Foster has 11 catches, and Richard Smith has seven. The Arizona State defense has two interceptions, two sacks, three fumble recoveries, and are allowing 304 yards per game. Osahon Irabor has 10 tackles with three of them being for a loss, Chris young has nine tackles, and Lalu Moeaklola has eight tackles. A win in this game in Palo Alto would boost the Arizona State program to a new level.
Stanford is 4-1 against the spread in their last five non-conference games, 5-2 against the spread following a game which they didn’t cover the spread, and 5-2 against the spread against a team with a winning record. Arizona State is 4-1 against the spread in their last five games, 2-5 against the spread against a team with a winning record, and 2-7 against the spread following a game which they didn’t cover the spread. The home team is 8-2-1 against the spread in the last 11 meetings of these two.
The total in this one is at 49.5 and I can see this one easily topping that mark as both teams have given up some yards and points and my free pick here is on the over. My stronger play is on who will cover the spread and I will post that college football pick in the Premium Area.
