The Louisiana Tech Bulldogs and Texas El Paso Miners lock horns at Sun Bowl Stadium Saturday.
Unlike 2012 when points were far easier to come by, Louisiana Tech is struggling to move the chains and find the end zone. That really explains their 1-4 start following a 35-16 loss to Army in week five. The key to this game was the inability to control the Black Knights option which amassed 414 rushing yards and had the ball for 40 minutes while La Tech mustered just 377 yards. The Bulldogs received 71 yards on 16 carries from Kenneth Dixon who scored late but went to the air more often than not with Ryan Higgins completing 20-36 for 320 yards yet finding the end zone just once. Andrew Guillot had a big game with five receptions for 123 yards including a 29 yard touchdown.

If you follow Texas El Paso football you know this team needs to play well on both sides of the ball and get breaks just to be competitive. What it takes to actually win is something I have yet to discover with the Miners falling to 1-3 after getting blasted 59-42 by Colorado State as a two touchdown under dog. UTEP trailed 28-7 at the half before tying it and then inexplicably falling apart. Blame this one on the defense with the Rams rolling up nearly 600 yards in any conceivable manner which squandered a 500 yard day from their own offense. Aaron Jones led a banged up back field with 94 yards and the run first Miners went to the air with great success behind Jameill Showers who threw for 365 yards and five touchdowns in a career day type effort with Jordan Leslie snaring three balls for 130 yards and two TD's.
I think Texas El Paso can win this if they are healthy in the back field but they might have discovered a solid passing game as well. I am thinking both defenses are vulnerable and the over looks like a solid bet...
