The East Carolina Pirates travel to the Tulane Green Wave in a clash of CUSA rivals on Saturday.
A week after thrashing instate rival North Carolina, ECU did just enough on both sides of the ball in a 24-17 win over Middle Tennessee State. I thought the Pirates were in a possible let down spot and the final score might indicate that but the numbers say different with a 511-334 advantage in total yards. The real story is ECU moved the ball easily but didn't do a lot of scoring but fortunately the defense made sure it didn't matter. The rushing attack was vanilla with Chris Hairston providing most of the punch with 94 yards on 18 carries. The burden of moving the chains fellon the right arm of Shane Carden who didn't disappoint with a 43-57 effort producing 365 yards and a TD with 12 players recording catches.

Tulane held off a late North Texas rally to upend the visitors 24-21 on Cairo Santos' 27 yard field goal as time expired. The Green Wave received stellar perfomances from their defense and special teams to off set a struggling offense who totaled only 229 yards. From what I have seen from this teeam , the rushing game needs more production to take the focus off of quarterback Nick Montana and that didn't happen with six players running 39 times for 95 yards and less then three yards per tote. Montana completed 18-28 for 132 yards and az touchdown but has to eventually find a way to stretch the field and prevent opposing defenses from stacking the line. Lorenzo Doss recorded a 67 yard pick six and returned a blocked field goal 62 yards to out score the offense.
East Carolina has the athletes to do a ton of scoring so if they get an early lead and force Montana to beat them, they will be in good shape. For Tulane the uglier this game is the better their chances and right now I'm leaning to the home dog...
