The Rice Owls look to keep their Bowl hopes alive when they hit the road to take on the Texas-San Antonio Roadrunners.
Rice knows that the early season schedule is critical to securing a postseason berth and that losses are killers so with that in mind the Owls breathed a sigh of relief with their 30-27 overtime victory at Tulsa. Rice led 24-10 at the half before the Golden Hurricane forced OT with a 14-0 second half run. The Owls struggled to move the ball in the final 30 minutes to finish with only 322 yards and were hurt by a pair of turnovers and eleven penalties. Jawon Davis and Turner Petersen combined for 102 yards on 21 carries to give Tulsa something to worry about on the ground. Petersen also led the receiving corps with five catches for 78 yards with a score. Taylor McHarque wasn't special but made some big plays on a 13-21 effort for 177 yards with a pair of touchdowns including a 25 yarder to Daric Dilllard in OT to win it.

I think Texas-San Antonio is a team that has to perform well on both sides of the football and capitalize on their opponents mistakes to be successful. That is a good script to go by but unfortunately the Roadrunners were unable to follow it against the high powered offense of Marshall in a 34-10 defeat. The Thundering Herd took control early with a 17-0 first quarter lead and held serve the rest of the way. The numbers told the story with UTSA out gained 404-254 with less then 100 yards on the ground although they did have a few 20+ yard gains. Eric Soza struggled to hook up with receivers and couldn't stretch the field with a 10-26 for 130 yard performance with three interceptions. The bottom line was Marshall was able to move the ball and the Roadrunners were not able to.
I am not always a fan of the Rice offense who moves the ball at times but seems to bog down too much. In my view the Owls should be able to do enough to get the cover here but it probably won't be pretty...
