The Notre Dame Fighting Irish and the USC Trojans face off on Saturday Night in South Bend in one of the biggest traditional rivalries in college football.

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish had the week of last week after beating Arizona State in Cowboys stadium the week earlier to take their record to 4-2 at the halfway point of the season. The Notre Dame offense is averaging 27.3 points and 386.8 yards per game while turning the ball over seven times. QB Tommy Rees has completed just 51.7 percent of their passes with 13 touchdowns and six interceptions. Cam McDaniel has the most carries out of the ND backfield and he is averaging 4.1 yards per carry with two touchdowns and George Atkinson III is averaging 5.8 yards per carry with two touchdowns. T.J. Jones is Notre Dame’s leading receiver with 33 catches and four touchdowns, DaVaris Daniels has 25 catches and four touchdowns, and Troy Niklas has 14 catches with four of those going for touchdowns. The Notre Dame defense is allowing 25.5 points and 374.5 yards per game with five interceptions, two fumble recoveries, and 10 sacks. Carlo Calabrese and Jarrett Grace each have 40 tackles and Dan Fox has 36 tackles. For Notre Dame and their fans, this game is much bigger than just an ordinary Saturday in the Fall.

The USC Trojans enter this Saturday’s game with a 4-2 record in what has already been a tumultuous season. Southern Cal is coming off of a win against Arizona in the coaching debut of their interim Head Coach Ed Orgeron who replaces Lane Kiffin who was fired. The USC offense is averaging 28 points and 408 yards per game while turning the ball over nine times. Cody Kessler has completed 60.4 percent of his passes with eight touchdowns and four interceptions and he has run for a touchdown. Tre Madden is the Trojans lead ground gainer averaging 5.3 yards per carry with three touchdowns and 13 catches and four more touchdowns, Justin Davis is averaging 6.8 yards per carry with six touchdowns, and Silas Redd is back in action as well. Marquie Lee is one of the top receivers in the nation based on talent but he has 30 catches and a touchdown and Nelson Agholor has 18 catches and two touchdowns. The Southern California defense has been tough allowing 22.8 points and 340.3 yards per game with seven interceptions, a fumble recovery, and 19 sacks. Hayes Pullard has 36 tackles and an interception, Leonard Williams has 36 tackles including 3.5 sacks, and Su’a Cravens has 31 tackles and two interceptions. USC is missing depth in some areas but there is no questioning the level of top tier talent they have.

Notre Dame is 4-1 against the spread in their last five games following a bye week, 1-5-1 against the spread in their last seven games overall, and 4-1 against the spread in their last five home games against a team with a winning road record. USC is 3-8 against the spread against a team with a winning record, 0-9 against the spread in their last nine road games, and 0-5 against the spread following a win.

This one should be a defensive game that could come right down to the wire and getting points. Especially at least a field goal, in games like these is usually a pretty good place to be so I’ll take the points in what is just a lean and more of a game to watch as a fan.
