The Rice Owls welcome the Texas El Paso Miners to Rice Stadium for a CUSA tilt Saturday.
I personally think Texas El Paso might be a little bit better then their 1-5 record but as they say you are what your record says you are. I just thought that a team that has solid rushing numbers would be able to play keep away from opposing attacks and keep the clock moving but it hasn't worked out that way. It didn't work that way in a 34-20 loss to visiting Tulsa because the Golden Hurricane were able to both run and throw while UTEP was effective on the ground only. The Miners totaled 222 rushing yards with Aaron Jones and Jameill Showers combining for 164 yards on 38 carries but Showers was far less successful through the air, going 12-30 for 166 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions in what might have be a win with a better performance.

Rice is one of my favorite teams in the CUSA as they are far from flashy and ride their bruising rushing attack to success. The Owls demolished New Mexico State 45-19 Saturday to improve to 5-2 as they inched a step closer to a postseason berth. The Owls took a 28-12 lead with them in to the break and were never in danger behind 515 yards of offense and over 400 rushing yards. Charles Ross paced the ground attack with 167 yards and a touchdown followed by Taylor McHargue who enjoyed a 13 carry, 90 yard night with three scoring jaunts while Jawson Davis and Turner Petersen combined for 123 yards as Rice had multiple rushing threats. McHargue added 89 yards and a TD through the air but the Owls would have won without throwing a single pass.
I said this last week but I'll say it again; Rice as a huge favorite is simply difficult to back. I think they can cover but it just seems unatural to me...
