The North Texas Mean Green visit MM Roberts Stadium to take the field with the Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles.
North Texas is beginning the second half of the season needing a few wins to solidify a postseason berth. It's been so far, so good with the Mean Green winning back to back contests following a 28-13 victory overt Louisiana Tech on the road. A balanced offense and solid defense were the key against the Bulldogs who actually out gained UNT 404-386. North Texas totaled 165 yards on the ground with Brandin Byrd leading the way with 71 yards on 14 totes with Antoinne Jimmerson adding another 50 yards on 14 carries. Derek Thompson completed 16-24 for 221 yards including a 61 yard scoring toss to Brelan Chancellor while the defense also got on the scoreboard with a 56 yard pick six.

It wasn't but a few years ago that Southern Mississippi was a top 25 squad but that entire roster was wiped out and the Golden Eagles have been in a rebuilding mode the last few years which has been a slow process. USM dropped a 55-14 decision at East Carolina to fall to 0-6 on the season with difficulties scoring and keeping opponents off the scoreboard being obvious problems. Those were the issues versus the Pirates who racked up 476 yards and led 31-0 entering the half while Southern Miss totaled 233 yards and 12 first downs while turning the ball over twice. USM really needed a rushing attack to eat some clock and keep the ECU offense off the field but less then 3 1/2 yards per carry didn't do that. Nick Mullens was spotty through the air (9-17/95) but did throw for a pair of 4th quarter scores and a pick.
I think this is a game that North Texas has to win or their postseason hopes could be iffy at best. I still hate laying points with this team on the road but I think the potential is there...
