The Purdue Boilermakers will be trying to salvage something positive from their season on Saturday when the Boilermakers head to Beaver Stadium to face the Penn State Nittany Lions.
The Penn State Nittany Lions started off the season strong, but since Penn State has started to struggle. The Nittany Lions have dropped two out of their last three, with their win coming against the Illini two weeks ago. This past weekend, Penn State fell to the Minnesota Golden Gophers 24-10. The Nittany Lions young quarterback Hackenberg has shown true promise and looks to be a solid starter for the future of Penn State, but as for now the Nittany Lions offense is struggling, ranking 76th in the nation in points scored per game, with an average of 27.6. Defensively the Nittany Lions are almost always solid, but this year has been the exception as Penn State is allowing more than 27 points per outing. The Nittany Lions have come down to earth some this season after playing high on emotions last year.

The Purdue Boilermakers are just a bad football team. I could sit here and quote horrible stat after horrible stat all day long for the Boilermakers, but that would just seem like piling on. Purdue has just one win this season, and that came in week two, against Indiana State, where the Boilermakers won by less than a touchdown. Purdue finally got into the end zone against the Hawkeyes this past weekend, and were able to keep pace with Iowa for the first half. The Boilermakers defensive front wore down in the second half however, as the Iowa Hawkeyes just continued to pound the ball on the ground against the Purdue front. The Boilermakers managed just 14 points against Iowa, with seven of those coming late in garbage time when the Hawks had pulled their number one’s.
The Purdue Boilermakers are 2-7 against the spread this season, and on the road, the Boilermakers are 1-2 against the number. Purdue is also just 1-4 against the spread when playing teams from the Big Ten. When listed as an underdog, this season, the Boilermakers are 2-6 against the spread.
The Penn State Nittany Lions are 3-6 against the spread on the year, and as a favorite, Penn State is just 2-4 against the number. The Nittany Lions are also struggling against the Big Ten this season, going just 1-4 against the number against their conference.
This game is an absolute no-play for me. I can’t feel confident in backing either team here, especially with a number like this.
With this high of a spread, you almost feel you need to take the dog, when the favorite’s offense is so poor, but I really can’t suggest putting any kind of financial backing behind the Boilermakers right now.
My free pick will be on the Nittany Lions, but if you want my opinion, it is to stay as far away from this game as possible. My free pick is Penn State -21.5…I guess.
