Two struggling squads square off Saturday as the winless Connecticut Huskies and the 1-9 Temple Owls meet at Lincoln Financial Field at 7PM.
Connecticut moved to 0-9 on the season with a 38-21 loss to SMU this past weekend. SMU controlled the contest but the Huskies had once of their best offensive showings of the season as they racked up 385 yards and pulled to within a touchdown in the 4th quarter before things fell apart. Casey Cochran threw for 227 yards, 2 TD’s and 2 picks -- one that was returned for a TD that all but sealed the game late. The freshman looked much better than last week and the Huskies will likely continue to increase his workload as they game plan for next year. Lyle McCombs led all rushers with 103 yards on the ground but was unable to reach pay dirt once again. On D, the Huskies once again failed to force any turnovers and allowed Garrett Gilbert threw for 4 TD’s.

Temple continues to play better but unfortunately find themselves in the midst of their toughest portion of the schedule. This past weekend, the Owls fell in disheartening fashion as the UCF Knights connected on a hail mary and a FG in the closing minutes to secure a 39-36 win. Temple’s improving offense once again looked solid as the Owls racked up 518 yards on a quality UCF defense. Quarterback P.J. Walker continues to make strides -- this week, Walker threw for 382 yards and 4 TD’s and rushed for another 41 and a TD on the ground. Robbie Anderson led all receivers with 188 yards and Jalen Fitzpatrick added 52 yards on 5 catches. Despite the loss, the Owls have found their future QB and should be able to take pretty big strides next year with a full off-season under Walker’s belt.
Some trends to consider - UConn is 2-5 against the spread in their past 7 games on grass and Temple is 5-0 against the spread in their last 5 conference games.
While both these teams sit in the cellar of the American Athletic Conference, Temple has shown plenty promise in recent weeks while the Huskies have shown the same routine struggles that they have shown all year. I expect P.J. Walker to have his way with this struggling UConn defense and the Owls offense to explode at home for the easy cover and win at the Linc. .
