The Tennessee Volunteers and the Vanderbilt Commodores face off on Saturday in Knoxville in a in-state SEC college football matchup.
The Tennessee Volunteers are looking for a strong finish to their season, as they will need to win their remaining two games in order to be eligible for a bowl game this year. The Tennessee offense is averaging just 24.9 points and 358.6 yards per game which doesn’t get it done in the SEC. Joshua Dobbs took over for Justin Worley at QB and he has completed 59.5 percent of his passes but he has yet to throw a touchdown and he has three interceptions and he has also rushed for 114 yards. Rajeon Neal is the Vols leading ground gainer with 895 yards and 10 touchdowns and he has 21 receptions while Marlin Lane has rushed for 450 yards and four touchdowns. Alton Howard has 40 receptions and three touchdowns and Marquez North has 37 receptions. The Tennessee defense allows 32 points and 434.3 yards per game. A.J. Johnson has 84 tackles, Brian Randolph has 61 tackles, and Dontavious Sapp has 54 tackles. Tennessee is improving but they still have some work ahead of them.

The Vanderbilt Commodores are once again bowl eligible and are just playing for seeding at this point but of course this in-state rivalry game has a lot more meaning. For most of their existence Vandy has played second fiddle to Tennessee and this is a chance at some redemption. The Vanderbilt offense is averaging 31.3 points and 371.2 yards per game. Austyn Carta-Samuels is back from injury and he has completed 67 percent of his passes with 10 touchdowns and seven interceptions and he has rushed for five touchdowns. Jerron Seymour has rushed for 618 yards and 12 touchdowns to pace the Vandy ground attack, Wesley Tate has four touchdowns, and Brian Kimbrow has rushed for 222 yards and two touchdowns. Jordan Matthews is the Vanderbilt passing game at this point as he has 83 catches and five touchdowns and is one of the best receivers in the nation. The Vanderbilt defense allows 26.5 points and 372.5 yards per game. Kenny Ladler has 81 tackles and four interceptions, Darreon Herring has 70 tackles, and Javon Marshall has 66 tackles. Vanderbilt has become a consistent winner.
Tennessee is 4-9 against the spread in their last 13 home games, 5-14-1 against the spread against a team with a winning record, and 5-11 against the spread following a loss by 20 or more points. Vanderbilt is 6-2 against the spread against a team with a losing record, 9-2 against the spread following a win, and 7-3 against the spread in their last 10 SEC games. The road team has covered the point spread in six of the last eight meetings of these two.
I expect a lot of movement between the 20’s and plenty of running the football making for a fast moving game and that should help this one stay under the total. I also have a play on who will cover the spread and I will post my pick against the spread in the Premium Area.
