The Stanford Cardinal and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish face off on Saturday Night as they close out their 2013 college football regular season playing for the Legends Trophy.
The Stanford Cardinal are already locked into the Pac-12 Championship Game next Saturday against Arizona State but don’t look for them to take this rivalry game lightly. Last year Stanford lost at South Bend on a controversial call where an obvious touchdown wasn’t called a touchdown. QB Kevin Hogan has completed 60.6 percent of his passes for 18 touchdowns and seven interceptions and he has rushed for two touchdowns. Tyler Gaffney has been a workhorse in the backfield rushing for 1,296 yards and 16 touchdowns. Ty Montgomery leads Stanford in receiving catching 50 passes with nine touchdowns and David Cajuste has 22 catches and four touchdowns. Shayne Skov leads the Stanford defense with 85 tackles and 3.5 sacks, A.J. Tarpley has 73 tackles, and Trent Murphy has tallied 13 sacks. Offensively Stanford is averaging 33.4 points and 403.1 yards per game while defensively they are allowing 18.9 points and 348.5 yards per game. Stanford has had a few stumbles along the way but overall it has been a solid season.

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish won’t be returning to the National Championship Game where they played last year but at 8-3 they have had a good season with some solid wins. Notre Dame already has wins over Pac-12 opponents Arizona State and USC and look to make it another win over the Cardinal. Tommy Rees has completed 54.4 percent of his passes with 25 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. Cam McDaniel has rushed for 608 yards and three touchdowns and George Atkinson III has rushed for 554 yards and three touchdowns. T.J. Jones has 59 receptions and eight touchdowns and DaVaris Daniels has 41 catches and six touchdowns as they lead the Irish passing game. Carlo Calabrese is ND’s leading tackler with 76, Dan Fox has 75 tackles, and Stephon Tuitt as six sacks. Notre Dame’s offense is averaging 27.7 points per game and 410.8 yards while defensively they are allowing 22.5 points and 373.2 yards per game. Notre Dame has been tough to figure out this season rising to the occasion against some of the better teams and then losing to the likes of Pitt.
Stanford is 11-3 against the spread in their last 14 non-conference games, 36-14-1 against the spread following a win, and 19-9 against the spread against a team with a winning record. Notre Dame is 2-5-1 against the spread following a win, 1-4 against the spread following a game where they allowed 20 points or less, and 5-2 against the spread in their last seven games at Stanford. The road team has covered the point spread in five of the last seven meetings of these two.
This one shapes up as a defensive game controlled on the ground but I can still see it possibly going over the total though I am not loving that play. My stronger play is on who will cover the spread and I will have that pick in the Premium Area as well as on the App at a special new low price.
