The Ohio State Buckeyes face the Spartans in the Big Ten title game on Saturday, but bigger things are in the cards for the Buckeyes as Ohio State will likely advance to the BCS Title game with a win.
The Michigan State Spartans are sitting at 11-1 this season; with their only loss coming against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish back in September…definitely a game the Spartans want back. Since that loss at Notre Dame, the Spartans have torn through the Big Ten, thanks in large part to their outstanding defense, which is currently ranked fourth in the nation in scoring defense, allowing just 11.8 points per game. The Spartans found their quarterback this season as well, as Connor Cook has stepped in and led the Spartan offense. MSU still is far from dominant offensively, but the Spartans have scored 30+ points in three of their last five games, all three of which were on the road.

The Ohio State Buckeyes are currently undefeated, and the Buckeyes own the nation’s longest win streak. Ohio State locked up with the Michigan Wolverines this past weekend in what turned out to be a classic match-up between these two hated rivals. The Buckeyes and the Wolverines exchanged blows on the day, but in the end the Wolverines went for the game winning two point conversion, and the Buckeyes intercepted Devin Gardner’s attempt, sealing the win and keeping their BCS Title hopes alive. The Buckeyes are undefeated, but they have struggled at times this season. Early on, the Buckeyes were far from impressive defensively, and relied on their high powered offense to get the job done. Since then, this defensive unit has really come around, and the Buckeyes have been winning, and winning impressively, which has helped them hold fast in the BCS ranks.
The Ohio State Buckeyes are 6-5 against the spread this season. The Buckeyes are 3-4 against the spread on the year against the Big Ten. When the Buckeyes are up against a team with a winning record, Ohio State is 2-2 against the spread this season.
The Michigan State Spartans are a solid 7-4 against the spread on the year, and when the Spartans are the underdog, MSU is 1-0 ATS. The Spartans are 6-2 against the spread against the Big Ten, and when facing a team with a winning record, Michigan State is 4-1 ATS on the year.
I’m going to take the points with the Spartans here. The Buckeyes are the better team on paper, but I see some value with MSU. The Spartans have far and away the better defense, and they will be up against a Buckeye team that is coming off a huge emotional win over their biggest rival.
Make no mistake, the Buckeyes will be up for this one, but this is a tough task for OSU to get up for back to back huge games, something this team is not used to doing in the Big Ten.
I’m thinking we may see something like a 28-24 type of game here, with OSU squeaking by with the win. For my pick, I’ll be on the Spartans, as well as the money line for MSU as I feel Sparty has a very real shot at the upset in Indianapolis on Saturday.
