Navy Midshipmen vs. Army Black Knights Pick-Odds-Prediction - 12/14/13Mark's Free College Football Pick Against the Spread
Navy looks to head in to the Bowl season with a win over Army.
The Army Black Knights collide with the Navy Midshipmen in their annual battle at Lincoln Financial Field.
Army hasn't had a season for the scrapbook at 3-8 with victories over Morgan State, Lousiana Tech and Eastern Michigan. Although their record is disappointing, the option hasn't been with an average of 326 yards per contest being the best in the nation, which is quite a feat. The downside is the passing attack produced around 80 yards per contest, which was dead last and probably needed to be more productive, given the fact that the Black Knights trailed late in games and needed to score quickly and sometimes in bunches, which doesn't happen when running the ball. Army's best chance at winning is to control the scoreboard and not fall behind, but with six contests where opponents scored at least 33 points, that didn't happen often enough.
Navy looks like the Midshipmen of old, but then again they don't seem to change from year to year. A heavy dose of the option and an adequate defense is usually what we see and that combination will have the Middies in the postseason. A three-game winning streak heading in to their annual bout with Army where the offense has piled up 152 points tells us the option is operating at peak efficiency and has the entire season at 322 yards per game to rank third nationally on the ground. The passing attack averaged just 100 yards, which is no surprise with the football seldom put in the air, but the passing can be effective at times. The key for Navy is the same for most option offenses; get the lead and let the run soak up yards and the clock.
Obviously we will see plenty of running with a few passes mixed in. I have been on Army the last two years, but I think Navy has been more dependable this season. The spread makes me cringe in this rivalry and I'll probably look more in to this in the coming days so this pick isn't etched in stone yet...
