The Vanderbilt Commodores open the season with the Temple Owls at Vanderbilt Stadium.
With James Franklin leaving for Penn State Vanderbilt plucked Derek Mason off the Stanford coaching staff to run things. The 2013 Commodores were more of a defensive led squad with the offense having their moments but in 2014 both sides of the ball must fill some key voids. When Vandy QB Austin Carta-Samuels got hurt backup Patton Robinette was a better runner then passer and will need to improve through the air to hold on to the starting spot. The Commodore's leading rusher Jerron Seymour is back and he is also the leading returning receiver with Jordan Cunningham likely to take over as the top target in the air. An experienced offensive line should help the ground attack while the defense needs a few bodies on the line and several in the secondary.

The Temple Owls enter 2014 looking to change their fortunes in close defeats a season ago where the team dropped six games by ten points or less. The Temple offense that used to be a ground oriented unit has become a passing squad as quarterback PJ Walker looks like a rising star after a successful freshman campaign that proved he could both run and throw. The Owls will lean on the duo of Jalen Fitzpatrick and John Christopher at wide receiver while Kenneth Harper and Zaire Williams provide a one, two punch in the backfield. The Owls need some help on the offensive line and the defense has to improve against the pass and with plenty of returning experience we'll see if that area improves.
I don't see Temple winning this and Vanderbilt could be out to make a statement in the opener but I struggle to lay over two touchdowns here. I'm hoping the Owls stay reasonably competitive which is all that is needed...
