The Pittsburgh Panthers travel to Boston College to play the Eagles on Thursday night.
The Pittsburgh Panthers won their season opener 62-0 over Delaware. RB James Conner led the way for the Panthers, rushing for 153 yards and four first-half touchdowns. Pittsburgh outgained Delaware 501 to 64 yards and posted the program’s first shutout in nine years. QB Chad Voytik completed 12 of 15 passes for 92 yards and 2 touchdowns in his first start for the Panthers. WR Tyler Boyd, who set school freshman records for receptions and receiving yards last year, left in the second quarter with a dislocated finger in his left hand. Pittsburgh will need Boyd moving forward if they want to compete in the Coastal Division. Third-year coach Paul Chryst, who helped turn Wisconsin into a scoring machine while serving as the offensive coordinator from 2006 to 2011, is trying to do the same with the Panthers. Chryst believe the skill players are there along with a massive offensive line. The Panthers first true test of the season will come on the road this weekend.

The Boston College Eagles won their season opener over UMass 30-7 on Saturday. QB Tyler Murphy rushed for 118 yards and a touchdown, as the Eagles outgained UMass 511 to 202 yards. Murphy, a graduate transfer who played nine games for Florida last season before missing the final three with a sprained throwing shoulder, also completed 17 of 24 passes for 173 yards and a touchdown. The Eagles pounded the ball on the ground early and often. Boston College controlled the clock, possessing the ball for over 40 minutes of the game. Murphy will be the key to the Eagles success this year. Boston College relied on the play of graduated RB Andre Williams, a Heisman Trophy finalist, last season, but will need Murphy to step up this season. Defensively, the Eagles will face a huge test this week when playing against the Panthers.
Both teams will try to establish the run and control the clock in this game. I expect Pittsburgh to stack the box and force Murphy to throw the ball. Meanwhile, I think Boston College will have some trouble slowing down the Pittsburgh rushing attack. The Panthers may be without WR Boyd, but I don’t think that will matter as Pittsburgh is the better team overall. Pittsburgh will win by at least a touchdown on the road Thursday night.
