The Central Michigan Chippewas and Purdue Boilermakers take the field Saturday at Ross-Ade Stadium.
The Central Michigan Chippewas rebounded from a 16-0 deficit to to beat the Chattanooga Mocs, 20-16. Cooper Rush threw for 173 yards and a couple of touchdowns in the victory, while Thomas Rawls ran for 121 yards and a touchdown. The Chippewas were really a two-man offense that produced 321 yards and scored 20 unanswered points. Defensively, the Chippewas allowed only 246 yards and held Chattanooga to 3-11 on third down attempts. Central Michigan also lived off of turnovers, as the defense intercepted two passes, including two from sophomore defensive back Tony Annese. It wasn’t the prettiest win, but Central Michigan will take it. The Chippewas, however, must improve their offensive production to have a chance of snagging this road win.
USA TODAY Sports
The Purdue Boilermakers started their season off with a 43-34 victory over the Western Michigan Broncos. Purdue returned back to its roots of running the football as Raheem Mostert, Akeem Hunt and Danny Etling ran for a touchdown in the victory, while the Boilermakers averaged close to six yards per carry as a team. On top of that, Etling passed for 181 yards and a pair of touchdowns, as the Boilermakers scored at least one touchdown in all four quarters, which is something Purdue fans aren’t used to seeing after finishing last in the Big Ten in points scored last season. Defensively, the Purdue Boilermakers allowed 456 yards, including 243 yards on the ground, numbers that must improve. Frankie Williams came away with seven tackles and a interception.
While both teams showed flaws in their week 1 victory and will be lucky to make a bowl game this season, you have to believe Purdue will win this game at home and cover the small chalk. The Boilermakers aren’t loaded with talent but do have enough to beat Central Michigan in their own backyard.
Give me the home team in this one.
