The Line: Alabama Crimson Tide -49 -- Over/Under: See the Latest Odds
The Alabama Crimson Tide and the Southern Miss Golden Eagles face off on Saturday in Tuscaloosa in college football action.
The Alabama Crimson Tide once again look to be contenders to win the National Championship this season and coming off of a win over a patsy in week two, they appear to have another on hand for this week. Alabama opened with a win over WVU and then crushed FAU at home last week. Blake Sims still appears to be Nick Saban’s starter at QB and he hasn’t done anything to change that and neither has Jacob Coker who saw plenty of action in week two. T.J. Yeldon and Derrick Henry make up this year’s version of the one-two punch in Alabama’s backfield and while they have an easy stretch right now, the Tide will lean on them when they enter SEC play. Amari Cooper is one of the most talented receivers in the nation but Christion Jones will have an increased role because of the injury to DeAndrew White. The Alabama defense has created just one turnover but they have six sacks thus far. Landon Collins leads the Crimson Tide defense with 15 tackles, Reggie Ragland has 11 tackles and a sack, and Trey DePriest returned to action last week after missing week one. The reality is we aren’t going to learn much more about Alabama this week but it is pretty certain the Tide will be a tough out once again this season.

While the Southern Miss Golden Eagles held off FCS Alcorn State in week two college football action I still have them as one of the worst teams in FBS CFB this season. Southern Miss was blasted in their opener at Mississippi State in week one and we should see plenty more of the same here. So. Miss QB Nick Mullens is just in for a long year as his team is simply over matched and will be on most weeks. Ito Smith leads to Southern Miss ground attack but since the Golden Eagles will be playing from behind most often it will be interesting to see just how much he factors in. Casey Martin and Markese Triplett lead Southern Miss in receiving but as a team the Golden Eagles have just two TD receptions. The Southern Miss defense has created four turnovers and has five sacks thus far but they will e hard pressed to add to those totals this week. Jacorious Cotton has 15 tackles and Emmanuel Johnson has 12 but look for those numbers to add up this season as I expect the Southern Miss defense to be on the field often this year. Southern Miss simply isn’t a good football team.
Alabama is 0-3-1 against the spread in their last four home games, 0-3-1 against the spread following a win, and 0-4 against the spread against CUSA. Southern Miss is 1-4 against the spread against a team with a winning record, 7-2-1 against the spread following a win, and 1-5 against the spread in their last six road games. The favorite has covered the point spread in four of the last five meetings of these two.
I hate laying big numbers but in this case I have no problem with it at all as we have one of the top teams in the nation facing one of the worst and it is going to get very ugly very fast.
